Diagnosing dizziness

A woman holds a phone; The image is blurred to imply vertigo

Dizziness can have many causes. You can help your doctor figure out what's behind yours by being as specific as possible about your symptoms.

If you see a doctor because of dizziness, he or she may check your hearing and look inside your ears, according to the American Academy of Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery.

Try to provide your doctor with accurate and complete information about your symptoms.

For instance, if hearing loss accompanies your dizziness, it may provide clues about the cause. If you feel dizzy only when you turn over in bed or when getting out of bed, this, too, may provide your doctor with clues.

Also, tell your doctor about any accidents or injuries you may have had and any prescription or over-the-counter medications you are taking.
