Planning ahead is the best way to stay safe until the power is restored. If you use electric medical or assistive devices, consider enrolling in a medical baseline program so you receive advance notice of planned power shutoffs.
Antes de un corte de energía
Prepare by:
- Making a plan with family and caregivers to make sure your needs are met .
- Keeping flashlights or electric lanterns with extra batteries on hand.
- Using surge protectors for sensitive electronic devices.
- No use velas ni lámparas de aceite para alumbrarse.
- Keeping phones, backup batteries, and other essential devices fully charged.
- Having a battery-powered radio for news and emergency updates.
- Storing freezer packs, ice, and a cooler to keep food or medicine cold.
- Learning how to use the manual release lever on an electric garage door.
- Knowing where your circuit breakers or fuse boxes are and how to check them.
- Writing down important phone numbers in case your phone is unavailable.
Durante un corte de energía
Manténgase seguro de las siguientes maneras:
- Si ve cables de electricidad caídos, infórmelo al 9-1-1 y a su compañía de servicios públicos. Mantenga lejos a personas y mascotas. Do not drive over downed power lines. If a line touches your car, stay inside and call for help.
- Turning off items that were on when the power went out. Leave one light on so you'll know when power is restored.
- Unplugging sensitive electronics if you do not have surge protectors.
- Never using a gas stove, oven, or grill to heat your home or cook indoors.
- Keeping refrigerators and freezers closed.
- Refrigerators keep food cold for about four hours.
- A full freezer can hold its temperature for about 48 hours.
- Utilice heladeras portátiles con hielo de ser necesario.
- Using generator outdoors only, at least 20 feet from doors and windows. Never use a generator inside your home.
- Going to a community location with power, especially during extreme weather. For longer outages, contact city or county officials to get a list of shelters. Algunos refugios son más aptos que otros para ayudar a personas con discapacidades o mascotas.
- Checking on neighbors, friends, or family members who may be without power. Or offering your home if you have electricity.
