7 WAYS TO EASE GAS AND BLOATING
We've all been there. Gas and bloating can be uncomfortable, embarrassing and downright painful. Fortunately, there are some simple things you can do to prevent and treat these common issues.
LIMIT HOW MUCH AIR YOU SWALLOW
Swallowed air is one of the biggest sources of gas and bloating. Activities that can increase the amount of air in your digestive tract include eating quickly, talking while eating, chewing gum, sucking on hard candy, drinking carbonated beverages and smoking.
MOVE YOUR BODY
Any physical activity can help you feel better. Try a walk, do a few yoga poses or take a dance break. Simply lying down and pulling your knees in to your chest for a few minutes can also relieve gas and bloating.
ADD FIBER
Constipation is a common cause of bloating. To help prevent it, eat more fiber. Reach for whole-wheat cereals, leafy greens, peppers, lettuce and apples.
WATCH YOUR DIET
Foods that may contribute to gas and bloating include beans, broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, bran and dairy products. A healthcare professional can help you understand if your symptoms are due to an issue like lactose intolerance and advise you on the best way to adjust your diet.
APPLY HEAT
Some of the discomfort of gas and bloating is from tension. Hold a hot water bottle over your stomach or have a warm bath or shower to help your body relax.
ASK YOUR DOCTOR ABOUT MEDICINE
Over-the-counter medicines, like simethicone, charcoal capsules or probiotics, may help ease symptoms. Herbs like peppermint, chamomile, anise, caraway, coriander, fennel and turmeric may also help.
EAT SMALL, FREQUENT MEALS
Smaller meals can help prevent bloating, while overeating may contribute to it.
